Philipine campaign. From 1941 to 1942. US and Phillipinos ere allies in this war against the Japs soldiers died. the Japs took over by taking the city Manila which resulted the Death March. Around 36,000 Americans and phillipinos died. The japanese occupiied the Phillipines from 1942 to 1945. On January 9, 1945 US forces led by General douglas MacArthur invaded the Philippines by force beginning the second battle. On February fourth 1945 US forces entered Manila and completely recovered the city within three weeks. Beginning of WWII.
The battle of Coral Sea. Took place from 4-8 of May 1942. Imperial Japanese Navy and Allied Naval and air forces from the US and Australia. japan planned to take over New Guinea so they could build airfields on Tulagi to take control of shipping lanes between America and Australia. America lost a carrier, a tanker, and a destroyer and casualties numbered at 540. Japanese lost two carriers, two destroyers, numberous vessels, and over 100 planes Japanese casualties were estimated at about 3500.
Nagasaki. Bombing started on the morning of August 9,1945. In the b-29 was Charles W. Sweeny carrying the nuclear bomb code-named Fat Man bombed at 11:02 am. The bomb damaged the factory that made type 91 torpedoes from the pearl harbor attack. About 30 people survived Hiroshima that fled to Nagasaki just in time to be bombed...again. casualties estimated from 40,000-75,000 and at the end of 1945 casualties totaled about 80,000 including maybe thirteen POWs. It resulted to Bombing because the Jap Generals would not acccept defeat and they didnt think the US would risk a million or more casualties by invading thier homelands.
Australia's role. Played rolle in the New Guinea ccampaign. new Guinea is a large land mass north of Australia. It provided large land for air and naval bases. Japan was trying to isolate Australia from the US by trying to capture port moresby in New Guinea. Prisoners of war held by japanese made up nearly half of australias deaths. Kamikaze Attacks. Were suicide attacks that killed and destroyed the enemies ships. A person would intentionally fly a plane into a ship. Causing it to sink. 56 percent of Japans merchant ships were destoyed by submarines. We would cut off almost all of Japans oil imports.
Allied powers vs Japan. Pearl Harbor and British Malaya. Four main areas in war were in China, Central Pacific, Southeast Asia, Southwest Pacific. Pearl harbor. Two attack waves. yamamoto knew that he three main US ships werent at the pearl harbor base but they attacked anyway. Iwo Jima. US fought and captured Iwo Jima from Japan. Gruesome battles Flametthrowers and grendades. Bunkers cause many additional casualties. Heavy machine gun and artillery fire.
