I. Treaty of Versailles

  • Signed by Woodrow Wilson for the United States, Georges Clemenceau for France, David Lloyd George for England, and Vittorio Emanuele Orlando for Italy. The treaty placed responsibility for the war on Germany and its allies and placed the burden of the reparations payments on Germany. All of its annexed countries were given back.Germany was upset by the treaty and led to the Nazi movement which later led to World War II. Hitler disobeyed the military terms of the treaty and reorganized military in Rhineland.

II. League of Nations

  • It was an inter-governmental organization founded as a result of the Treaty of Versailles.
  • The primary goals included preventing war through collective security, disarmament, and settling international disputes through negotiation.
  • Its disadvantages were that they could NOT declare war, and the United States was not a member.

III. Know the basics about the following countries:

-How did WWI/Treaty of Versailles impact this country
-How did this country change in the 1920's/1930's(includes leader coming to power and their goals).
-What was/were this countries military strategies in the 1920's and 1930's.
-How was this country involved on WWII(what alliance did they belong to, how were they involved within the war)

Germany

  • Treaty of Versailles- They did not have military power and had to give up annexed countries. It later led to the Nazi movement.
  • 20'-30's- Hitler came to power, creating the nazi movement and the Holocaust during World War II
  • Military Strategy- Blitzgreig, or lightning war, which is a massive tank charge followed by tons of infantry.
  • World War II- The Axis powers. The were United States and the Allied powers enemy. They started the Holocaust which killed millions of Jews and other people.

Italy

  • Italy was given two small areas of Istria and the South Tirol. The Adriatic coast was made part of a new country called Yugoslavia.
  • Benito Mussolini came to power as the prime minister. They invaded Ethiopia in 1935 and gained control of it.
  • Itay's main strategy and goal was to keep Hilter from power and to keep being supplied by the Twin Towns.
  • Italy was part of the big four allied powers along with the US, Soviet Union, and Great Britain.

IV. Hitler's Treatment of the Jews

  • Hitler hated the Jews because he believed they were the reason they lost World War I.
  • He started the Nazi movement and set up concentration and death camps.
  • In the concentration camps, Hitler and his followers tested on the jews, especially twins to see how to clone.
  • In the Death Camps, Jews were seperated from their families and many were gassed.
  • over 6 million jews were killed in the Holocaust.

V. Munich Conference-Policy of Appeasement

  • Enabled Hitler to annex Czechoslovakia's Sudetenland.
  • Signed by Nazi Germany, France, Britain, and Italy.
  • Hitler disobeyed the treaty and took over all of Czechoslovakia.
  • This failed treaty helped lead to World War II.

VI. US Role in the 1920's/1930's


  • Washington Naval Conference was to disable Japanese naval expansion in the waters of the west Pacific, and to keep the Open Dorr Policy active.
  • Kellog-Briand Pact was an agreement between 16 countries, including the Big 4 allies, that put a ban on all war and conflict.
  • Neutrality Acts throughout the 1930's was a series of acts intended to prevent the U.S. from being drawn into a war.
  • Quarantine Speech- Given by FDR, calling for "quarantine of the aggressor nations"
  • Bases for Destroyers- The UNited Kingdom traded fifty destoryers for the US Navy in exchange for land rights on British posessions.
  • Lend-Lease Act- allowed the United States to lend or lease war supplies to any nation that was "vital to the defense of the United States"

VII. Soviet-German Non-Aggression Pact

Stated that Germany and Soviet Union could not attack each other. If there were ever a problem between the two countries, it was to be handled amicably. The pact was supposed to last for ten years, but it lasted for less than two.

IX. Pearl Harbor

  • On December 6th, US intercepted a message from the Japanese saying something about an attack on another country.
  • December 7th, several Japanese planes and subs bombed Pearl Harbor. It resulted in several deaths and was reffered to as "A day which will live in infamy.
