The project I have is the Pacific Front. It was during WW2. U.S. vs. the Japanese. What I think was interseting about this project was Iwo Jima. It has one of the most famous pictures of America's history. Picture was at the end of the battle.

Japan's battle stragery in Iwo Jima

General Kuribayashi he was the commander of Iwo Jima. He was educated in Canada and in the Untied States of America.

He had 3 strageries.

1.Didn't fight above ground. They fought in tunnels and underground houses.

2.Called back for no survivors, they were planning not to survive

3.Japanese soldier was suppose to kill at least 10 Americans before he got killed.

US Invasion

Marines 110,000 and 880 ships. It took them 40 days from Hawaii to Iwo Jima.

Aircraft that was used in the war barely touched the Japanese because they were underground

This was largest invasion up to this time in this war.

Feb. 19 1945

It was the beginning of D-Day

On the first wave of footsoldiers they couldn't fox holes because of the volcano ash. So they were sitting there for the Japanese. 100,000 were fighting on this tiny island which was 1/3 of the size of Manhattan. For those 36 days Iwo Jima was the most populated 7.5 miles on earth. Japanese were ready for this battle.

Marines fought above ground because Japanese soldiers fought below ground. Marines rarely saw a Japanese soldier. The Japanese soldiers could see all of the American soldiers. Liquid gas and grenades were very affective against the Japanese because they were in tunnels.

The purpose of this battle

To capture Iwo Jima and take over to airfields on Iwo Jima

Casualities and Losses

USA:

Wouded-18,070
