Kilroy was a picture of a man peeking over a wall with the words "Kilroy was here". Soldiers saw the picture and drew it everywhere as a joke.
OPA- Office of Price Administration (1941) - Control the price of goods. Food rationing included restrictions on sugar and meat; clothing rationing restricted silk and nylon. Gasoline rationing was started not to just save gas but to save the rubber made in tires. Less gasoline made people walk or carpool, thus saving the tread on their tires."A" stickers were gas restriction stickers for the common people. "B" stickers were issued to business owners for 8 gallons a week. "C" stickers were milage stickers and allowed more gas to school officials, doctors, and people who needed to travel. "M" stickers were for motorcycles. "T" was for truckers. "X" was a high mileage sticker for traveling salesmen. Horse meat was not rationed.
War Production Board- Make more to send out to help war efforts.
War Finance Committee and War Bonds- Over the course of the war, 85 million Americans purchased bonds totaling approximately $185 billion. People gave money to the government and gathered interest on the money they loaned so it turned into an investment.
Japenese Internment Camps- forced Japenese Americans from their homes and into camps. Their belongings and homes and rights were taken because they were seen as threats after Pearl Harbor. It was extremely racist, however.
Effects of WWII on US- It stimulated the economy and created more jobs, the average wages increased by 30%. The middle class expanded. Federal Power increased.
We rebuilt Japan and Germany broke up into two countries. United Nations starts. Most deaths ever in a war.
