we are discussing the projects you guys went over yesterday and then we will continue with the rest of the projects today.
Red scare=fear of communism taking over the united states
-senator Joe McCarthy=fueled the red scare, he gave a speech that stated he knew 3 people who were in gov that were communist, he had hearings and would question people in the government= he wanted people to rat other people(name names). Accused people without evidence.
-Ruined peoples careers=went after people who were communist, actors, directors(Walt Disney)
--supporters of McCarthy=republicans, catholics, conservative protestants, blue-collar workers, and Joseph(dad) and Robert Kennedy.
-John F. Kennedy=partier, womenizer
-McCarthy downfall= charged people in the army that they were communist, senate took away his power(couldn't investigate anymore)
We just got done with my group topic, the Berlin Wall
nov. 9, 1989=this is when the wall came down, it started when a couple of people decided to jsut try to go over the wall and the guards let them so word spread that the guards wouldn't do anything so everybody got together and started dancing on the wall and tearing it down.
Korea
-still communist
-leader is Kim Jong un now today in 2014
-was controlled by Russia and then by japan.
-after WW2 is when Korea became split into parts, north and south
-an election was going to happen to get Korea back into one country=united nations held it=russia refused to allow north korea to participate in the election=so they handed the power of north korea to kim il sung=south elected the nationalist exile syngman rhee.(1948)
-it was a back and forth war between karea,china and the united nations
-for the end of the war, no peace treaty was signed till this day
-this war showed that we can go to war and not use nuclear weapons
-spreaded the cold war to asia
Vietnam War
-the draft was different,
-when troops came back they were spit on and called baby killers
-wanted to stop the domino effect for communism was our goal
- wanted independence
-US didn't want to give them independence because they would become communist
-french connection= french tried to keep a hold of vietnam from the japanese and we sent them supplies and whent the french lost
-Geneva conference=vietnam would be split into 2 parts, at the 17th parallel=Diem was south=ho was the north=set up elections to make the country one again= some elections weren't held because neither side wanted to lose.
-Diem=Vietnamese disliked him, he was french educated and Diem was catholic and controlled south Vietnam who were Buddhist and he didn't like Buddhist. he was assassinated and us supported it.
