we did our presentation on Berlin Blockade
Bay of Pigs- Fidel Castro had a revolution in Cuba and became communist. Cuban exiles invade Cuba who were trained by the CIA. We made it look like a civil war. It was not successful. We were hoping a popular up rise would happen and it didnt. We traded baby food for the prisoners
Cuban Missile Crisis- someone took a photo of Cubas ballistic missiles, we were prepared for war and JFK gave a speech about it. We quarantined Cuba and it prevented Cuba from getting more missiles from the soviets, we were gonna do an airstrike and then invade Cuba,but that would mean nuclear war. The Soviets withdraw the missiles from Cuba and we promised to never invade Cuba again.
Red Scare/McCarthyism- the fear of the U.S becoming communist. Senator Joe McCarthy gave a speech stating 208 people who were communist. He would investigate some people and try to get them to admit being a communist or rat people out who were known communist. He may have only done it because he would get support
Berlin Wall-The Soviets will build a wall to try and keep the communists in and people were fleeing from east to west berlin and then to west Germany. It was 28 miles long and 12 ft. high 24 years later after the war was built Mikahail Gorbachev comes to power and gave a speech saying they will no longer interfere. Berlin wall then came down Nov. 9 1989
Korean War- Korea was invaded and ruled by Japan from 1910 until 1945. After WW2 korea was split into two north (USSR) and south (US) at the 38th parallel. An election was going be held to eventually unify Korea. The United Nations held an election in 1948. The Soviet Union refused to allow participation in the election in their occupied zone . Instead they handed over power to the North Korean communist party under Kim il sung the south elected the nationalist exile stnman Rhee. The rest of the war involved little terriotory change and lengthy peace negotiations. Even during the peace negotiation
Vietnam War- We got involved by helping the French sending them weapons and food and money. We used Gorilla Warfare. France had gained control of Indochina in a series of colonial wars beginning in the 1840s and lasting until 1880s. during world war 2 Vichy France had collaborated with the occupying imperial Japanese forces. Vietnam was under Japanese control during ww2 although the Vichy french continued to serve as the official administrators. After the Japanese surrender, the french fought to retain control of their former colony against the viet Ming Independence movement led by communist party leader go chin minh. Vietnam was partilioned temporarily into a northern and a southern zone of Vietnam at the 17th parallel. Pentagon papers were leaked to the press and knew that the government was lying. People were drafted for war by there birthdays, people got out of it by moving, being physically unfit, got married, joined national guard and peace corps, claimed to be homosexual, being rich. Nixon called for the vietnamization of the war, "Peace with honor" Gradually pull US troops out and train the ARVN to take our place in fighting the North, Expanded the war into Laos and Cambodia leading to college protests. On January 15, 1973, President Nixon announced the suspension of ofensive actioin in north Vietnam, The paris Peace accords were later signed on January 27, 1973 which officially ended the US involvement in the Vietname conflict. Peace only lasted about 2 years in north and south Vietnam. North Vietnam invaded the South and the South lost.
How did the Cold War end?---we had close ties with our allies and Russia did not. China started siding with us after 1972. The Soviet economy was in shambles whereas the US's was flourishing; huge deficit, high inflation, corruption, social problems, shortage of basic needs, The strong anti-communist presidency of Reagan. Gorbachevs willigness for change and reform.
