Berlin Blockade/Aircraft

- Berlin was entirely in the Soviet sector
- They wouldn't let any supplies into our sector
- We airlifted supplies into our sectors\
- Soviets put up a blockade to western powers
- In May 1949, Russia admitted defeat and lifted the blockade
Red Scare
- we were very fearful that communism was going to spread
- McCarthy started accusing people of being communist
- He was senator for Wisconsin
- He would have hearings to try to see if people are communist
- McCarthy started to accuse people in the army as communist
- McCarthy never had proof of people being communist
- He was one of the most powerful people in our country
- He died due to alcohol abuse
Bay of Pigs
- Cuba became communist in 1959
- Drafted started with president Eisenhower
- Kennedy thought that we couldn't have a communist country so close to the US
- Try to have the Cubans invade over us because we don't want to go to war
- This invasion fails, they are either captured or killed
- We got the Anti-Casto Cubans back by trading baby food
- Cubans asked the Soviets to bring down missiles
- Hurt Kennedy because it was an embarrassment
