After Japan invaded French Indochina American stop trading with Japan
Japan signed the Soviet - Japanese Neutrality Pact in April, 1941 guaranteeing that Japan would not go to war with USSR.
Japan thought if they hit US hard with a surprised attack that would keep US out of the War. Plan backfired. Stupid as Germany invading USSR
