Joined the league of Nations

signed the 4, 5 and 9 power pacts

4 Power Pact - Respect each other's possessions in the pacific 

5 Power Pact - limit naval size

9 Power Pact - agree to respect china independence and the open door policy 

Kellogg Brand act - outlawing war 

Japan signed all these contracts and later would break all these contracts.

Invasion of Manchuria - 1931

Japan couldn't get resources because they are an island country. High Tariff caused the non trading. Japan invaded Manchuria for their resources.

Japan dropped out of the League of Nation because of the invasion.

Japan invades China - July 1937

launched an attack from Japan and Manchuria. 

Rape of Nuking.

A mass of killing of Chinese people  (up to 300,000)

Mass raping of Chinese women and girls

Mass of looting and arson

Still causes tension between the two countries today.

Tripartite Pact is signed forming Axis power.

Why did Japan attack Pearl Harbor

After Japan invaded French Indochina  American stop trading with Japan

Japan signed the Soviet - Japanese Neutrality Pact in April, 1941 guaranteeing that Japan would not go to war with USSR.

Japan thought if they hit US hard with a surprised attack that would keep US out of the War. Plan backfired. Stupid as Germany invading USSR

When Japan officially signed on USS Missouri  

Potsdam Conference July 1945

  • On July 26, the United States, Great Britain, and China, USSR issued the Potsdam Declaration
  • Announced the terms for Japan surrender 
  • Dismantle the current Japanese government (excluding Hirohito)
  • The Allies will occupy Japan
  • Japanese Military forces will be disarmed and allowed to return home
  • War Crime Trials
