Tuesday-
Banks and stock market-
- Emergency Banking Relief- Past five days after taking office. Passed because thousands of banks were closing. Passed four days after FDR announced the bonk holiday, which closed banks down temporarily. They closed them and shut them down til it was stable. It pretty much ended the bank run in 1929-1933.
- Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation- Created by Glass- Steagall Act in 1933. Insured peoples money in banks into 100,000$. Passed in response to the bank failures after the stock market crashes. Insures money in savings and and checking accounts and money market accounts and CD's.
- Banking Act of 1935- FDIC strengthened the power of the federal reserve which makes banking safer overall.
-Stock Market
- Federal Securities Act- Passed in 1935. Made the stock market a safer place for people to invest there money.
- Security and Change Commission- This organization regulates the stock market therefore making the market more secure and safer for peoples money.
Energy-
- Tennessee Valley Authority- Created to generate electric power and control floods in a seven state region around the Tennessee river valley. It has grown to become the countries largest power company. Some criticized for only helping only one area of the U.S because everybody had to pay for it.
- Rural Electrification Administration- It brought electricity to the farms.
Wednesday-
WPA- Built 650,000 thousands miles of roads 78,000 bridges. Produced almost 450,000 works of art.
Federal Art 1- Provided jobs to all artist and setting up schools.
Indian Reorganization Administration- Passed 1934. Abolished the Dawes Act and allowed native Americans to govern themselves. Allowed native Americans to keep there own land. Helped to create jobs for Indians. Th act is still around today.
FDR- Relief Reform Recovery. Relief for the people. Reform the banks ans stock market. Recovery of the economy. Some say FDR went to far and spent way to much money. Others say he didn't do enough he needed to do more.
People that thought he was doing to much thought he was getting to powerful and the government was to big. Some of the acts they thought were interfering with peoples lives to much and thought they were unconstitutional. The spending of way to much put us way to far in debt.
Court packing bill- He wanted to pack the supreme court with 6 democrats. He was saw as upsetting the checks and balances.
Father Charles Caughlin- Said that families would get 200 dollars a month. His problem was is that he was anti junior.
Francis Thompson- Argued FDR wasn't doing enough of the elderly. His ides eventually helped social security get passed.
Huey Long- He had a program called share our wealth. He thought every man should be well off. Tax the rich at 100%. He wanted to take all the wealthy rich peoples money and give it to the poor.
