Germany thought they would win the war within months. Russia mainly wanted land from Germany but, eventually dropped out of the war. The U.S. was in the war for a year and a half. The U.S. was very selfless during WWI. We mainly paid for the war and didn’t gain anything. Woodrow Wilson was the president that lead us through WWI. At first Wilson declared that the US would remain neutral. The US was a country of immigrants. If you were in immigrant that came from Germany you would want to support Germany. If you were from Italy you would want to support Italy. That’s why it was hard for the US to pick sides. Wilson kept winning the election because he kept us out of war. What got the U.S. involved in WWI?-We were neutral for three years. We were upset with both sides of the war because both sides were stopping our ships and taking our weapons and things. Germany started sinking U.S. ships, which really made the U.S. mad. Lusitania, Arabic, and Sussex were three ships with passengers on them. Germany thought that they where ships with weapons and were helping the other alliance. There was in international law saying that if you were going to sink a neutral countries ship you had to give them a warning first. Germany says they did give Americans a warning that they were going to sink the Lisitania, but they really didn’t. The Zimmerman Note was another big reason we joined the war.-The note was sent by Aurthor Zimmerman and it was supposed to go to. The message in the note said that they are going to start sinking any ship, anytime, anywhere, without warning. The note also said that they would help Mexico get back land that they lost from us if they joined them in the war. Germany knew that the US was giving Britain food and weapons. The only way to stop that was by sinking any ship and they also hoping it would make the US mad and they would go into the war.-Trade with England increased and we became economically involved in the war. We loaned at least 3 billions of goods to England in 1916.-American business pushed us into the war for the business and money they would get to make weapons and things.
