Today in class we started listening to Mr. Bruns’s lecture on WW1.Europe was divided into the Allied Powers and the Central Powers and of course the neutral countries. Germany was the main power of the Central Powers whereas the Allies had many great powers. Germany had to fight a two sided war since they were surrounded.Kaiser Wilhelm led Germany. Czar Nicholas led Russia.Imperialism was one of the main reasons for the war and Africa and Asia were being carved up. Another main reason was the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand who was the prince of Austria-Hungary. Militarism was the building up their militaries which makes them more likely to use them. It became a world war when all of the colonies of the powers started fighting. Nationalism is pride in your country but it can be a bad thing if taken too far. The last reason for the war was the alliances that were being formed. This meant that the Powers disliked other nations and made them more likely to attack one another.The Balkan Peninsula was nicknamed the Powderkeg because it was controlled by a lot of people that hated each other. The assassination set this off causing the war. A-H declares war on Serbia. Russia came to help Serbia. Germany declares war on Russia. France comes to help Russians. EctThe Germans wanted to capture Paris quickly through the Von Schlieffen plan. It didn’t work.Trench Warfare was warfare that was fought in these trenches dug into the ground and the front line was protected by barbwire and other things. Behind the first one was the support and the reserves. The machine guns in the trenches made it extremely hard to cross without dieing. People would basically live in the trenches.Gas was used. They used Tear Gas, Chlorine Gas, and Mustard Gas. Mustard gas produced burn like blisters anywhere it made contact with the skin. Tanks were just coming into action. The used a lot of artillery. Zeppelins were used for bombs and spying. Animals were used to test gas masks and other weapons.
