Today, in class, we got on the computers and recited a specific portion of the Latin America map. We continued to watch the video, I believe the Anderson Cooper 360 video about climate change and its effects. This isn't good, as I got insanely bored with it yesterday. I wouldn't have had any troubles if we had been able to get on computers. The video segment continued on the Carterettes Islands. The ocean has heated up one degree as well. And when the ocean warms up, it expands and rises. The residents think the Artic ice melting is affecting them directly. But some believe it is the loss of coral reef so they cannot protect from storms. The journalists dove down 60 feet into the water, and saw that the coral reef had very little marine life. Coral bleaching is when the increase of temperature allows the coral to remove the algae tissue, which leads to the coral dying. They think the water will cover the island they were reporting on within a few years. The next segment (After the commercial break) was over the topic of Lake Chad. They say the lake has shrunk by 90 percent of its original size, leaving it to almost only sand. They think there might be a problem with the mighty river that feeds Lake Chad, along with the current population from the 4 countries it borders depleting the water that is left. As the earth gets warmer, the moisture should become rain, evaporates instead. Fish that reside in Lake Chad used get up the 60 kilograms in mass, but now are typically just a few grams. The majority of the scientific community think that global warming is man made, but some other important voices claim otherwise. Senator James Inhofe is only one example, which we had read his theories and reasonings. The carbon stored in trees are released when cut down, which is happening at an alarming rate. Twenty percent of the Amazon forest has been destroyed in the past forty years. Led by President Barack Obama and the Brazilian animal protection agency (or something similar), many armed agents walk the forests looking to prevent poacherism. Only 60-80 of the trees that are cut down are removed legally.Brazil is the number one beef and soy producer, which needs a LOT of land. Hence, deforestation. Slash and burn is a term referring to farmings cutting down trees and burning them to make room for planting and releasing nutrients into the ground.I did my daily reflective web log.
