Today, in class, we got on the computers as we continued watching the video that we had started yesterday. The segments we have already watched included unsafe abortions/overpopulation, unequal woman's rights, and some other minor topics. Some people finally did their Canada test, which is totally nerf ball. We talked about Obama's statement about sending 30,000 more troops to Afghanistan within the next couple months, which I disagree with. I hate war, etc.On the video it mentioned that two babies were born every 3 seconds in the country of India. They are having so many kids, because all parents want sons, as they are valued more than daughters. 8,000 abortions were performed in India (in some specific time interval), and only ONE was a boy. ONE. They have considered even banning gender testing. Some merchants promise a boy for exchange of the family purchasing their merchendise. They claim they are friends with Sheeba, the god of something. The next segment was about the countless deaths of children. They bury their dead babies in places like where rivers meet, while they let their clothes wash away. When too many children die, the population increases. 20 percent of all children, which would be one in every five, die before the reach the age of five years old. These children are generally underweight and show signs of malnutrition, as almost all Indian babies are born into poverty. There was a clip where the kids said their ages, and one little guy was SIXTEEN, which is older than me by a few years. I suddenly feel different about my vertically challenged-ness.There are people in India who are smart about their children by having fewer children, feeding them properly, and providing them with the education they deserve, which is great and I applaud those families that do these things to have a better life for both the parents and the children. The next segment was about abuse. An estimated 5,000 women die in India each year from sterilization techniques.I did my reflective blog during all of this, obviously.
