The two people that most people thought would buy Alaska were Great Britain and the United States because they were the closest, Great Britain had control of Canada. After the war had ended only 385 people died of combat deaths, many more people died of poor living conditions. Why did imperialism and colonization come about and why did the US stay isolationist until the early 1900's?Wanted to avoid war and foreign affairs. The US had to establish their own good government first. Had issues like slavery. Basically had to deal with their own problems first. Geographically isolated by two oceans.Discuss the the development of the Panama Canal.I learned that the France started to build a canal through South America but because there were a lot of diseases (especially with mosquitos) they gave up. Columbia, who was in control of Panama at the time, did not want us to get control of Panama. Panama declared its independence with the help of the US Navy and they allowed us to build the canal. The United States drained the swamps in the area to help eliminate yellow fever and malaria.Discuss the following US foreign policies:Big Stick Diplomacy--"Speak softly but carry a big stick"Was the idea of negotiating peacefully, but threatening with a ‘big stick’. The big stick was the military. This stated that the United States would now use force to protect its economic interests in Latin America.Roosevelt Corollary and Monroe DoctrineMonroe Doctrine- American foreign policy opposing interference or colonization in the western hemisphere, or the Americas, from the European government. Also, the United States would not interfere with European colonies. It basically said that the Americas no longer were open to European colonization, and any attempt to do so would be considered as “dangerous to the peace and safety” of the Americans, and it said “to leave the Americas to the Americans”.Roosevelt Corollary-An amendment to the Monroe Doctrine in 1904 by President Theodore Roosevelt. This stated that the United States would now use force to protect its economic interests in Latin America.Dollar DiplomacyInfluenced by economic situations, in which the United States tried to expand foreign policy in Latin America and East Asia by promising loans from American businesspeople to them. This was created under the presidency of William H. Taft. Taft said that by using this, the situation in Latin America went from “warlike and political” to “peaceful and economic”.Missionary DiplomacyWas the idea to not recognize any Latin America government that was seen as intimidating to America’s intentions.
