Today bruns started testing. I didnt go today so I studied by answering some of the questions. What was the Progressive Era?The Progressive Era was a priod of time from 1890 to 1920ish where a lot of change came about to help the common people. It was a period of time where reform happened.Be able to explain what the progressives did to help the following groupswomen Women wanted the right to vote because they didnt want to be put under blacks. They used the 3 prong strategy. 1) They tried to convince legislature to let them vote. They went to every state to convince them that they should be able to vote. 2) They tried to use the 14th amendment. They had women vote and see what happened. 3) The 19th amendment said that women could vote.workers They made working hours and OSHA is a group that checks to make sure that the business is up to par on all the safety stuff. Muller vs. Oregon said that women couldnt work more than 10 hours a day. They think that women arent srong enought to work that long or do the same things as men. Bunting vs. Oregon in 1917 said that men could only work 10 hours a day. They also got workers compensation. The workers got paid if they got hurt on the job and couldnt work.consumers Companies had to put labels on things before they could sell them so the consumer knows what they are getting before they buy it.Poor/children The Keating Owen act came about and it said that states were not allowed to ship stuff made by kids to other states. Adults went on strike to stop child labot. A child labor law came about later.banks The federal reserve bank came about and it was basically a bankers bank. What did the Progressives do to regulat businesses and railroadsThe Interstat commerce act prohibited wealthy railroad owners fixing the prices. It had little affect on people. Then the Elkins act came about. It says that you cant change the rates without the public knowing. The Hepburn act set maximum rates that the railroad could charge. The meat inspection act said that you had to have a certain amount of cleanlyness when you were packing meat. The food and drug act said that you had to label what was in the food you were selling.Discuss the Prohibiton MovementIt was a time when they banned the manufacturing of alcohol. There were temperance groups that were for prohibition. Carry Ntion-crazy lady-she went into bars and destroyed them with an ax. The 18th amendement was about banning alcohol and the progressives were responsible for making that come about. That is all I got to today.
