Today Andrea talked about her topic.Discuss the following US foreign policies:Big Stick Diplomacy--"Speak softly but carry a big stick"Big Stick Diplomacy was using our military forces and powers to do what we want. Its basically just a threat. An example of the U.S. using the Big Stick Diplomacy was when the U.S. sent forces over to Panama to try and scare Columbia into letting us have the land for the Panama Canal.Roosevelt Corollary and Monroe DoctrineWas a warning to Europe to stay out of the western hemisphere. It also said that America would stay out of European colonies.Dollar DiplomacyWilliam Taft took over after Roosevelt. He was a progressive at first. Instead of going to countries and starting war and taking over that way we would control and invest money in their businesses. An example of Dollar Diplomacy was when Diaz invited Wilson to come and take over Meixans minds.Missionary DiplomacyMissionary Diplomacy was a way to promote democracy in other countries. Missionary Diplomcay says we wouldn't recognize a country that was a threat to us or came to power in a bad way or has a bad government. Used it to help other countries set good governments up.---Issues with MexicoDiaz was the leader of Mexico, he was pro U.S. We basically took over their minds in Mexico. Diaz was thrown over by Medero, Medero was killed by Huerta. Wilson refused to recognize Huerta's government. Nuerta lost a lot of power so he was out and Carranza was in. Carranza was pro U.S. and so Wilson recognized his government. Poncovilla was a Mexican who invited Americans down to see a mine and he killed them. He was a fan of Carranza's government but, Carranza didn't get like him very much. The US sent 15000 soldiers down to Mexico, we ran into Carranza's army, but we avoided war. WWI started shortly after. The Zimmerman note was to try to get Mexico to side with Germany in the war and go against the US.
