"Big stick" diplomacyToday we started talking about the big stick diplomacy. The big stick was basically the military system. We are using our military as more of a threat instead of actually using it. Like in the Panama Canal, Columbia owned it and we wanted it. To get it we sent some battleships down to panama to back them if they wanted independance. Colombia got intimidated and panama wanted independence and we backed it. Colombia thinks of us as a bully now and they dont like us at all. Teddy Roosevelt sent great white ships around the world and it was basically just to show off our power. It was to send a message like, hey dont mess with us because were strong.Taffs dollar diplomacy.Tafft took over Teddy Roosevelt and he was not liked very much at all. He started the Dollar diplomacy. Like instead of going into countries momentarily we would invest in countries. We would control like their money and businesses, so basically we would like own them. "Substituting dollars for bullets" So instead of shooting them and gonig into war we just go in and invest in them.Missionary DIplomacy.It is to push democracy. If we refuse to recongnize a countries government because they did bad things. We would refuse contries that werent democratic. We refused to recognize the taliban as the leader of Afganastan. Missionary Diplomacy says the we are not going to recognize a counry that came into power because they killed thier leader or something like that.U.S issues with MexicoLatin America had very unstable governments. It was mainly because they were overtrown. They were very poor. In 1910, Diaz was in power. We were the pupeteer and he was the puppet. We controled him. We took over their mines and we invested money in them. That is an example of the dollar diplomacy. Diaz is overtrown by Midera. A few days later he is overtrown by Hutra. Because of Hutra killing Miders then the Missionary Diplomacy came into action. We did not recognize his government. Hutra took like 14 american soliders hostage. He then releases them because we got mad and he appologized. We invaded the city of Veracruise. Hutra looses a lot of his power and he fades away. Carranza then steps in. He became a puppet as well. He wanted us to take over thier silver mines. He upsets some people. Then Pancovilla invited some americans to look at this mine and he kills them. Then he kills some more americans. Then we invade Mexico with like 15000 soldiers and we want to find Pancovilla. Pancovilla was kind of like a terrorist and he came to U.S. and killed some people. He was trying to help the Mexican people. He was a bad guy. We clash with Carranzas army. We just leave and there was not fight. War was prevented and then WWI broke out.The Zimmerman note was a note to try to get Mexico agianst us in the war and side with Germany.
