Old Diplomacy - how we used to deal with other countries (up until 1900's)
- Non-interventionist - the US did not intervene in foreign affairs, especially Europe's
- Isolationists - the US acted alone in foreign affairs as compared to working with other nations
- Passive and Reactive - the US waited for events to occur and then acted accordingly
- Weak Army and Navy
New Diplomacy - how we deal with countries now
- Imperialistic - going out and conquering territory to create an empire
- Stronger Army and Navy
- Interventionists - especially in Central and South America - Monroe Doctrine (telling European countries to stay out of Latin American countries)
- Strong Nationalism - having strong pride and confidence in one's country

Why did the US and the other countries look to imperialism?
- The western frontier was settled - 1890
- Brings military power and prestige to your country
- Naval bases and refueling stations
- $$ for natural resources as well as opening new markets to sell your goods
- Believe in cultural superiority - White Man's Burden
Spanish American War
- By 1900, Spain was a dwindling empire
- The US had been interested in Cuba for a long time (US tried to buy Cuba in 1854)
- Cubans have been revolting against Spanish frequently (1868, 1878, 1886, 1895) wanting independence
- Many felt sorry for the Cuban people
Causes of Spanish American War
- The USS Maine sinking
- The Yellow Press said Spain sunk ship
- Butcher Weyler and his treatment of Cubans in the concentration camps
- The De Lome Letter - letter intercepted by The Yellow Press where the Spanish ambassador was bad mouthing the US President
- Jose Marti's destruction of US property in Cuba-making it look as though Spain did it
- To help Cubans get independence
Deceleration of War and the Teller Amendment
- Ultimately said that Cuba would get independence after the war
- Only reason why we didn't take Cuba
How US became a Super Power
- We became a superpower by getting Alaska, Hawaii, Philippines, and also other countries

- A way to keep China open for all countries to trade with them

- Said that the US would be the police officer between Latin America and Europe
- The US would use force to protect interests in Latin America

- Instead of taking them over militarily, we take them over economically
