Why did the US and the other countries look to imperialism?

- The western frontier was settled - 1890

- Brings military power and prestige to your country

- Naval bases and refueling stations

- $$ for natural resources as well as opening new markets to sell your goods

- Believe in cultural superiority - White Man's Burden

Spanish American War

  • By 1900, Spain was a dwindling empire
  • The US had been interested in Cuba for a long time (US tried to buy Cuba in 1854)
  • Cubans have been revolting against Spanish frequently (1868, 1878, 1886, 1895) wanting independence
  • Many felt sorry for the Cuban people

Causes of Spanish American War

  • The USS Maine sinking
  • The Yellow Press said Spain sunk ship
  • Butcher Weyler and his treatment of Cubans in the concentration camps
  • The De Lome Letter - letter intercepted by The Yellow Press where the Spanish ambassador was bad mouthing the US President
  • Jose Marti's destruction of US property in Cuba-making it look as though Spain did it
  • To help Cubans get independence

Deceleration of War and the Teller Amendment

  • Ultimately said that Cuba would get independence after the war
  • Only reason why we didn't take Cuba

How US became a Super Power

  • We became a superpower by getting Alaska, Hawaii, Philippines, and also other countries

Open Door Policy

  • A way to keep China open for all countries to trade with them

The Roosevelt Corollary

  • Addition to the Monroe Doctrine
  • Said that the US would be the police officer between Latin America and Europe
  • The US would use force to protect interests in Latin America

Dollar Diplomacy

  • Economic Imperialism
  • Instead of taking them over militarily, we take them over economically
