Propaganda goals- Dehumanize the enemy. Encourage Patriotism. Conserve food. Buy war bonds. Sense of urgancy. Enlist in the military.
US Involvment- Upset with both sides of the war because both sides were sinking American ships. (Luisantania)
Sussex Pledge- Ended Germany from sinking of passenger ships and gave people time to evacuate ships before they sank. Eventually Germany broke their promise.
The Zimmermann note- A coded telegram sent by Germany to try and get Mexico into the war. The note was intercepted by Great Britain and given to the US. US was outraged and it helped the US join the war. Germany promised that Mexico would get the Mexican Cession back if they won. (Texas, Arizona, New Mexico).
Mexico's Relationship with the US- Terrible. We invaded Mexico to get Pancho Via and there was constant conflicts and wars right before WW1.
War Hawks AKA Jingos- People that push for war and want it. Ex: Teddy Roosevelt & Leonard Wood.

Treaty of Versailles- Ended the war with Germany.
Willson's 14 points- Presented January 8th 1918. Speach was intended to Assure the coutry the war was being fought for a moral cause and postwar peace and not imperialism. Other Allied countries thought the points were too easy on Germany. Its one thing the got Germany to surrender. 14 points include- (1-6 were more idealistic, so good ideas but unrealistic) 1. An end to secret treaties. 2. Freedom of the seas. 3. Free trade for all countries 4. Disarmament 5. End to Colonial Claims 6. Self-determination for all countries - Russia was struggling with government overthrows. 7. Restoration of Belgium. 8. Restoration of Belgium. 8. Restoration of France. 9. Turkey should be sovereign (independent/free) 13. Poland would be given their independence. 14. The "League of Nations" would be developed.
Treaty of Versailles-
France wanted to be really harsh to Germany while the US was too merciful.
Germany lost land to France, Belgium, Denmark, Czechoslovakia, and Poland. Russia lost a lot of land too.
The League of Nations took control of Germany's overseas colonies.
Germany's army was reduced to 100,000 men; the army was not allowed tanks. Germany was not allowed an air force. Germany was allowed only 6 capital naval ships and no submarines. When Hitler came to power, he reconstructed the military and simply did not care about this rule.

Germany had to take responsibility for starting the war. Germany had to pay a lot of money. A league of Nations was set up. Permanent League of Nations- Great Britain, France, Italy, US. There were four non-permenent members that rotated. All members had to submit disputes for investigation, arbitration, and settlement. If a member ignored, league could take action. France wanted an international army but the US and Great Britain did not. This was one of the main reasons the US didnt join. Germany and Societ Union couldnt join right away.
Why did the League of Nations fail to Prevent WWII- There was no international military force. Finland, Lithoania, Lafia and Estonia broke away from Russia. Poland came from Germany and Russia.
Why din't the US sign the Treaty of Versailles or join the league of Nations? 1- Pres. Wilson was a democrat and congress was controlled by Republicans. Congress was worried that joining the League would cause the US to be pulled into wars. Congress decides when the country goes to war but by joining, people were worried this power would be stripped of them. Congress didn't want to sign the treaty so Wilson goes around the country to tell the people.
