The Progressive Era was a period of time from 1890 to 1920 ish where a lot of change came about to help the common people. It was a period of time that reform happened. There are four goals: protecting social welfare, promoting moral improvement, creating economic reform and fostering efficiency.Today we started blog discussions.*Workers Safety: by AshleyWhat did the progressives do to make the workplace safer?--The national consumers league by Florence Kelly, they went around and talked to people about the working conditions and factories and stuff. The working conditions were not very good. It was very dangerous. They could only work like 8 hours a day so they wouldn’t get tired. Before it was very dangerous and there were like four year old working in the dangerous conditions. Immigrants were getting hurt more then whites at work. It was bad, long hours. OSHA, they make sure your business is “up to par” on all the safety stuff.*Prohibition: by ShelbyWhat is prohibition?--It was a time when the sales and manufacturing of alcohol was banned. Why did people want prohibition to come about?--They wanted to protect their children. Dr. Benjamin Rush believed that the drinking of alcohol could harm a personWhat tactics were used to bring about prohibition?--Temperance groups were groups of people that were trying to go for prohibition. Carrie Nation went into bars and destroyed them with an ax. She was very crazy, and scary. The 18th amendment came which banned alcohol and the progressives were responsible to help this come about. This amendment was later “revoked”.*Workers hours: by ChelseaWhat did progressives do to help workers reduce the number of hours they had to work?--Muller vs. Oregon said that women couldn’t work more than 10 hours a day. Women weren’t allowed to work more than men because they “weren’t strong enough”. Children worked up to 19 hours a day with only one, one hour break and they worked like 6 days a week. Bunting vs. Oregon in 1917 they said that men could only work 10 hours a day.*Reforming Elections: by Mr. Bruns. What did progressives do to make our country more democratic?--The white, rich, man had the most power and they would elect the senators. They would pick white, rich, males and they would make laws that would affect white, rich, males. They made the 17th amendment which said that the people of the state would be able to pick the senators. They made a direct primary or caucus and they could pick who they like to be the one democrat or the one republican. This gives more power to the common people. The secret ballad is very private, very secretive. Before it wasn’t secretive and people could see who you were voting for. The white, rich, males would pay off the immigrants and then they would see who you were voting for.*Child Labor: by BrandonWhat did the progressives do to help end or reduce child labor?--A lot of really young kids had to work in mines and put things though holes where men couldn’t fit. They had to go under like machinery and stuff. They had to work like 16 hours and if they fell asleep they got like whipped. Factories hired the kids because they didn’t have to pay them very much. The kids didn’t complain and they like their little fingers. Workers went on strike to try and stop child labor. Keating owen act was that it did not allow states to transport goods that were made by kids. So if a kid was making clothes in Iowa, those clothes couldn’t leave Iowa. They eventually made child labor laws.*Workmen’s compensation: by ReyWhat did the progressives do to help end or reduce labor?--If you got hurt on the job you could be fired and they didn’t have to pay you. The progressives made laws that if you get hurt on the job the company couldn’t fire you and they had to pay you. Some companies started death benefits that if your husband dies then the spouse would get money. It’s kind of like life insurance. Today you get paid while you are recovering.*Women’s Suffrage by: AprilWhat is women’s suffrage? Women had to cook and clean and take care of the kids at home. They weren’t really able to work. What approaches did women use to gain the right to vote?-3 prong strategy-1.) They tried to convince the state legislature to let them vote. They went to every state and tried to convince them that they should be able to vote.2.) They tried to test the 14th amendment. They would have women vote and see what would happen.3.) The National Amendment??They didn’t like that minority black men got the right to vote and the women didn’t. The 14th amendment said that if you were a citizen you could vote, but women still weren’t able to vote. The 19th amendment said that women could vote. Women’s right to vote and women’s suffrage kind of went together. The “new woman” was college educated, she liked sports, and she wanted a job.*Fare Wages by: JoeWhat did progressives do to bring about better wages for workers?--Massachusetts created the first minimum wage law in 1912. Henry Ford in 1914 paid his workers 5 dollars a day, 10 hours a day. Before that they were getting paid like 1.75 for working 16 hours a day, if you were a man. Women and children got much less. On July 24, 2009 the minimum wage was changed from like 5 something, to 7 something. Over the years it started slowly going up and up. The reason people wanted a minimum wage was to insure their job.*Segregation by: Me8. What is segregation?--It is the separation of blacks and whites. Like blacks had to drink out of this bad water fountain and the whites could drink out of a really nice water fountain. They had to go to separate schools. What did progressives do to help African Americans?--They didn’t do much but there were two court cases:Plessy vs. Ferguson and Brown vs. Board of EducationThe Plessy case was about "separate but equal" which means that they said that black people were equal, but could not go to the same school as whites. The Brown case was about overturning the Plessy case, which means that the blacks go to school with whites. This started the downfall of segregation. A lot of black adults encouraged other black to send their kids to "white" schools. The white adults didn’t like desegregation because they felt that they were superior to black people and that the blacks didn’t belong. The black children faced a lot of hostility from the other white children.*Regulating Food and Drugs: by AndreaWhat did the progressives do to make food and drugs safer for the people of the United States?--Made sure that they were labeled correctly. Like what was inside of it. In 1986 the FDA had to inspect all the meat that was being slottered so it was good for people to eat. When the meat was being processed it had to be sanitatized. The meat inspection was enforced to protect the people. The Jungle was a book about how President Roosevelt was a supporter of the regulating the meat packing industry. This book was written by Upton Sinclair. Cocaine was in coca-cola at one point and it had to go to court. They had to take cocaine out and they put caffeine in its place.*Conservation by: AustinWhat did progressives (TR) do to help conserve land and resources in our country?--Nobody cared about the resources. They thought that they were just going to have an endless supply. The start of conservation started in 1872 at Yellowstone National Park. It was the first national park. Also in 1872 J. Serling Morton started “tree planting day” which later became “Arbor Day”. The Timber Culture Act started in 1873 and it was granted by settlers that gave them 160 acres of land to plant trees. They took advantages and just used it for farming instead of planting. In 1875 congress passed an act that said you can’t damage any trees on government property. In 1890, three national parks were created: Yosemite, Sequoia, and General Grant all in California. So, basically they made national parks and state parks. They then granted “Bird Day”. It is like arbor day by for birds. Check out page 323. It shows all federal and state lands.
