A lot of change came about to help the common people. Four goals for progressivism is protecting social welfare, promoting moral improvement, creating economic reform, and fostering efficiency. 1890 to 1920Workers Safety1. What did the progressives do to make the workplace safer?Progressives passed laws to make working hours lower. It went from 14 to 12 to 10 to 8 hours a day. Also getting rid of child labor in factories. National Consumers league went around the country and talk to workers about worker conditions. OSHA goes in and makes sure there are supplies available to keep the workers safe.2. What did the progressives do to help end or reduce child labor?gone3. What is prohibition? Why did people want prohibition to come about? What tactics were used to bring about prohibition?It was a time in the late 1800s the production and sales of alcohol was banned. There was a doctor that believed that the drinking of alcohol could harm the body. Groups of people that were going for prohibition were called . Carrie Nation would go into bars and destroy them with her axe. Alcohol was considered the reason for all of the nation problems. Then they passed the 18th amendment. It did not go over easy, secret clubs called speech easies. They eventually got rid of the amendment.4. What did progressives do to help workers reduce the number of hours they had to work?1902 there was a law passed to make employees pay for deaths in their businesses. Muller vs. Organ passed a law stating women could work 10 hours a day. In early 1900s children worked up to 19 hours a day and only had one hour break time. In 1917 the Supreme Court rule for a 10 hour work day for men. Today 8 hours is topical a full time job is 40 hours a week. Overtime is a time and a half or double time.5. What did progressives do to make our country more democratic?Secret ballot unable to see who you voted for, initiative, referendum able to start a bill for the common people, recall able to kick out other elected official, direct primaries become more common reduced political machines power. Also direct election of US Senators- 17th Amendment in 1913. After that amendment was passed everyone except for blacks and women. Today anyone can vote.6. What is women’s suffrage? What approaches did women use to gain the right to vote?gone7. What did progressives do to bring about better wages for workers?Massechutes created the first minimum wage law in 1912. Henry Ford started the 5 dollar day. Before that they would generally get pay a $1.75 a day for 16 hours and that was a good paying job. He low the hours to 10 hours a day and then they had money to buy a car.8. What is segregation? What did progressives do to help African Americans?Segregation of blacks and whites.9. What did the progressives do to make food and drugs safer for the people of the United States?gone10. What did progressives (TR) do to help conserve land and resources in our country? Built safety zones for trees, plants , and animals called state national parks. In these parks no one you kill game or cut down trees.11. What did progressives do to regulate businesses in the United States?Sherman anti-trust act was formed to break up monopolies. Teddy Roosevelt was the first known trust breaker. Calton anti-trust act also was formed to break up monopolies. The government use to take a laize faire(hands off) approach businesses.12. What were the progressive’s philosophy on tariffs? Describe the Federal Reserve System.gone13. Describe the impact aid organizations had on our country.Aid organization had a social gospel was a big movement on not what you can do for yourself but what could you do for others. Salvation Army was a Christian group. It was meant to be a church for a poor and needy. Today it does a lot of helping for poor and homeless. Settlement houses were started in London. It was brought back to the US and Hall House was started. Would have nights themed with other cultures.14. What is socialism? How was it started in the United States?gone15. What/who were muckrakers and what impact did they have on our country?An American journalist who tries to expose corruption in the government. Idabe Iarbell focused on oil exposed Rockefellers way of getting rid of competition . Lincoln Stephens focused on government helped fix the city government. Upton Clare wrote the jungle. Helped passed the meat inspections.16. What did businesses do to bring better efficiency to their business?Before it took a long time to make a product because on person made everything. During they made assembly line and instead of one person doing everything each person had their own little part they had to do. Henry Ford created the $5 work day.17. Describe the major social changes that affected women during the Progressive Era. The high class women worked at home. Low and/or Medium class worked in factories and on the farm. There was a club where women went to talked about issues like child labor laws. The first women college a lot of women worked at home or as teachers and secretaries. More and more started going to college and started to get good jobs.18. What did local government do to reform itself during the Progressive Era?goneMy opinions.This is very different from life today. I am so glad that this was changed could you imagine girls not being able to go to school. Think Mr. Bruns you would not be able to have me or april in your class you would die. Well another thing is I would not be able to work that long i would die.
