What did the progressives do to make the workplace safer?Only work 10 hours a day then went down to 8. Little children worked as well as immigrants and many died due to unable to read language. Today OSHA could shut you down if your business is not safe enough. You now can also get paid while injured, before you would get fired b/c you couldn’t do your job.2. What did the progressives do to help end or reduce child labor?Before there were little children would be working in factories. Kids from ages 6-18 would work in mines that men could not fit in. they worked 16 hour days and if they fell asleep they would have an arm or leg cut off. They would be whipped to stay awake. They would get less pay. During - workers went on strike against child slavery. Keting Owen act- did not let products go out of state if it was made by children. Now you have to be at least 14 to be working at a store or business in wealthy countries. In Africa they do have kids working that are young.3. What is prohibition? Why did people want prohibition to come about? What tactics were used to bring about prohibition?The drinking and selling of alcohol. Dr. Ben Rush thought that drinking could cause temperaments and abuse. Carrie Nation she would have axes and ruin the bars.18th amendment banned alcohol. People would smuggle in alcohol from Canada and other places. Now each state has their own laws and some counties and towns are dry.4. What did progressives do to help workers reduce the number of hours they had to work?5. What did progressives do to make our country more democratic?Secret ballet voting.6. What is women’s suffrage? What approaches did women use to gain the right to vote?Before – women were mainly the cooks and took care of the house. Women were getting frustrated b/c there vote didn’t really matter and they started working Textiles and out with agriculture. Once black men were able to vote they got mad b/c they got to vote and they were white and they didn’t. created 15th amendment gave blacks and minorities to vote. Court case that said just b/c you were a citizen doesn’t mean you get to vote. During- 19th amendment women were finally able to vote late 1900s. new age women was a women who wanted to further her career, like sports, voted.After- most women are still getting paid less then men, but that should hopefully change soon.7. What did progressives do to bring about better wages for workers?Countries started them minimum wage earlier than others before the minimum wage was like 50 cents. Henry ford started the $5 a day. July 24 the minimum wage went from 5 to seven. Over the years the wage would go up and down. Now minimum wage is $7.25. New Zealand started the minimum wage.8. What is segregation? What did progressives do to help African Americans?It is the separation of blacks and whites. NAACP still around to this day. They do scholarships for blacks. Booker T. Washington was the head of a black group and Teddy Roosevelt had him over for dinner. Woodrow Wilson brought segregation back to Washington D.C.9. What did the progressives do to make food and drugs safer for the people of the United States?The pure food and drug act was to make sure items were labeled right. At that time cocaine was not illegal. The FDA could inspect any meat found unfit to eat. There would still be warnings on containers even if the meat was thrown away. The jungle book was a book about the Chicago food industry. There would be rats running on the meat and sawdust. The cattle would be eating other parts of cattle and people were discustied by what they were reading.10. What did progressives (TR) do to help conserve land and resources in our country? Pg.323The first national park was tallow stone. Arbor day was started in 1907 in Nebraska. Timber culture act- 1873 congress passed an act that gave 160 acres to plant trees for ten years and many took advantage of that and didn’t plant them and just took the land. 1875 congress passed a law that said you cant cut or take anything from national parks. AFA was founded by horticulturists and botinests. Sequoia park and Yosemite and general grant were all created in a week. They are all parks in CA.11. What did progressives do to regulate businesses in the United States?Lazafair-when the gov. stayed out of businesses. FTC broke up monopolies. Ex. Microsoft.12. What were the progressive’s philosophy on tariffs? Describe the Federal Reserve System.Tariff- tax on imported goods. Tariffs were high and low throughout history. High benefits the rich b/c its less competition. Lower is going to be more competition and so prices are going to be lower. Federal reserve system-the banks bank.13. Describe the impact aid organizations had on our country.Social gospel was like a movement and it said you should help the poor and not just yourself that was put on by Christian churches. YMCA is young mans Christian association. This was a place to stay so you wouldn’t have to live on the street it is now a recreation center. Salvation Army started 1865 by William Booth. Wanted to create a church but couldn’t. Settlement houses which are like apartments. They were originally started in London but when Jane Adams and a friend went to London they brought back the idea to Chicago.14. What is socialism? How was it started in the United States?Socialism- the gov. has control over everything. Henry thought you should be paid on talent and how well you worked. Thomas Hawkin thought price on supplies should be on how much is available. 1871 the marks theory thought everyone should be paid the same. During- socialism Germany started showing signs of socialism and in the U.S. there was a drought so farmers crops weren’t growing so they had no money to pay the railroad companies.15. What/who were muckrakers and what impact did they have on our country?16. What did businesses do to bring better efficiency to their business?Better assembly lines, scientific management, $5 a day.17. Describe the major social changes that affected women during the Progressive Era.The middle and upper class took care of families. Lower had to work in fields such as plow, brought in crops. More than half the African American were migrated to bigger cities to cook. Women’s jobs were teachers, secretaries, cooks, caring for families.18. What did local government do to reform itself during the Progressive Era?They switched over from political machines to having a city mayor and city manager.
