Today is Tuesday the 24th of November. We are conintuing our chapter 10 presentation things. Teddy Rooselvelt was elected as president of the United States of America. Russia declared war on Japan, and Japan asked America for help. Everyone thought that it would be a simple matter for Russia to stomp the guts out of Japan. The Japanese military (with the help of the U.S.) strategically outmatched the Russian forces. The Japanese knew that if the war dragged on, they would be defeated. The Japanese defeated Russia. The outcome of the war shocked the war. People were astounded that a white supremecist, world power like Russia would be defeated by a dark-skinned Asian Island Nation. TheTeddy Roosevelt headed the project to aid the Panamanians in Central America with building the Panama Canal. Panama was a Columbian territory. The French had been previously trying to build the canal but were unable to complete it due to many worker's deaths and the cost of the project. The Canal would be a fast and efficient way to travel a shorter distance when trying to ship goods and travel around the world without having to go all the way down past the bottom of South America.Building the canal proved to be an extremely difficult project because the designated area for the sites of the canal went right through jungle terrain. When the French were trying to build the canal, many workers died from machine accidents. The U.S. lost many workers due to Malaria and other terrible diseases. They illiminated the amount of misquitoes that spread Malaria by draing the swamps in the area. The project took 10 years to complete and cost hundreds of millions of dollars. Columbia, who owned Panama was fearful that America was going to try to control that area. Roosevelt incouraged Panama to declare independence from Columbia and then give the rights to build the canal to America. They did, and Columbia became very upset. They felt that the U.S. was bullying Panama into declaring independence. Many of the Spanish countries were mistrustful of the U.S. because they feared that we would try to encourage other countries and territories to declare independence only to be controlled by the U.S.Foreign Policies-Isolationism: Early on in the United States' dealings with the world, we kept to ourselves. We did not involve ourselves with foreign affairs. We kept nearly completely to ourselves. The Monroe Doctrine was a warning to Europe and the rest of the world to basically stay out of the Western Hemisphere. the Doctrine declared that if any European country continued to colonize in the Western Hemisphere, or if they moved their military to these parts, we would interpret it as a hostile threat on America. This could lead to war with America. The Roosevelt Corillary was an addition to the Monroe Doctrine that declared that if European countries have a dispute with Latin American countries, that they should turn to the US as an arbitrary. America would be the wall between the two arguers to help try to settle the dispute.-Big Stick Diplomacy: This was America's way of getting what we wanted through our military might. The message is "Speak softly but carry a big stick". Roosevelt was big about showing the world that we had great military power to get what we wanted. The purpose of this was not necessarilly meant to be used, but to show what would happen if another nation refused us.-Dollar Diplomacy: Big businesses and banks in the U.S. would lend a lot of money to businesses and infrastructure of other countries. This ensured that America would have economic control over all of these countries.-Missionary Diplomacy: This was when America said that if any government comes into power in a bad way, or are hostile to the United States, the United States would refuse to recognize them as a country.-Dollar Diplomacy: This is when big businesses and companies would go into other countries and basically dominate the playing field for bussiness. It ensured that Americans had control of the economy. By doing this, we basically had control of the country. This is an alternative to taking over a country with military force.Back in the Day, the US was really oriented towards the saying "It's my way of the Highway" attitude. I can see how other countries around the world would be reluctant to deal with America and be mistrustful or fearful of us.
