-Puerto Rico is a common wealth.a common wealth is when Puerto Ricans are U.S. citizens.they pay U.S taxes.they can join war.they basically are the same as the states but they can't vote for president.they don't want to become a state so they don't loose their Spanish heritage.The Teller Amendment garunteed Cuba it's independence after the Spanish-American war.Cuba was the last major colony to gain it's independence from Spain.Jose Marti was a Cuban hero that helped with getting it's independence.The Cubans want us to leave their country and give them their independence like we said we would but we didn't right away.This had to do with the Treaty of Relations.The good neighbor policy insures the U.S. involvement in Cuban affairs.The Platt Amendment's conditions were:1. Cuba could not make treaties with other countries.2. The United States could intervien when we thought we needed to.3. Cuba could not go into debt.4. They had to give us land for the Naval Base.We abided by the Teller Amendment's rules with strings attached but eventually they got complete independence.We wanted Cuba for several reasons like..tobacco plantations, a base to ship things to Central America, sugar plantations, etc..The Open Door Policy was when the U.S wanted to get into China and be able to trade with them.So it was like a "free trade for all with China"most countries liked it but they wouldn't agree to sign it until much later on.John Hey made it so that China didn't loose it's independence.
