I did my blog presentation today on US Control of Puerto Rico. The Teller Amendment guaranteed Cubans' indepence after the war. After the Spanish-American War, the US stayed in Cuba and helped out with aid. They Cubans wanted us out and they thought that we were going to take their country over. We helped out with malaria, cleared out swamps, etc. The Plaid Amendment stated that no other country besides us could but land in Cuba. They had to add this amendment to their constitution. After the added it, we had to remove our troops. This is what the Plaid Amendment listed; Cuba could not make treaties with other countries. We could intervine whenever we felt necessary, Cuba could not go into debt or borrow money from other countries. US could buy land and lease land for us army bases.-Brandon JamesRight after Cuba, Philippines finally got their indepence. The Philippines hoped that after the war we would give them indepence right away, like we did with Cuba. We went to war against them. Ultimately, the war was to gain the Philippine's freedom. The vast majority of the US troops were African-Americans. We were able to push down, and defeat the country. This war cost 400 millions of dollars. We helped build schools, hospitals, houses (made them modern). They have been indepent ever since we gave it to them.-Greg ConryAmerica was looking for a country to trade with. Looking towards Asia and China. We were concerned about China being taken over by other countries. John Hay issued the Open Door Policy. They were a series of policy statements sent to several imperialist nations. An open door allowed each country to trade with US with no restrictions. This guaranteed Chinese indepence.
