Today Mr. Bruns continued with his power point. He talked about Underwood Tariff which cut tariffs for the first time in 1913 since the Civil War. Sixteenth amendment allowed graduated income tax. The Federal Reserve System strengthened banks, allowed for a way to control the amount of money in circulation (controlled inflation and deflation.), controlled intrest rates, and broke the country into 12 districts with each on having a Federal Reserve Bank. If say a bank in Iowa was struggling they could go and borrow money from the Federal Reserve Bank in its district. Today we also started our presentations on chapter 10.Why did imperialism and colonization come about and why did the US stay isolationist untill the early 1800's?-resources-economic reasons-trade-military bases-become stronger as a whole-make money-refueling stations-gain landThe US stayed isolated for many reasons.-avoid foreign wars (we had a weak army and navy)-had to build up the US first (industry, government, & internal improvements)-slavery issues/reconstruction after civil war-geographically isolated-had vast natural resources in US-settle the west-followed Washington's advice, "stay out of foreign wars and allainces"Describe how the US acquired Hawaii and AlaskaRussia first owned Alaska.
