Why did imperialism and colonization come about and why did the US stay isolationist until the early 1900's?Imperialism is when big countries take smaller countries. Countries colonized to get natural resources, money, land, power, refeuling stations, trade, and to establish naval bases. The U.S. stayed isolated because first of all we had a weak army and navy, so we tried to stay out of wars and foreign affairs. We had to first build up our government and industries. We also had issues to deal with like slavery. We are geographically isolated from everyone too. The two oceans Pacific and Atlantic seperate us from the rest of the world. We basically followed President Washington's adive, "stay out of foreign wars and alliances."Discuss how the US acquired Hawaii and Alaska. In 1867 Russia, who was in control of Alaska at the time, was going to give it up. The two countries they were considering giving it up to was The United States and Great Britian because they were the closest to Alaska. At the time Britain as in control of Canada. William Seward who was Secretary of U.S. made a deal with the Russian Prime Minister that the U.S. would buy Alaska for 2 cents per acre. The House of Representitives didn't want to buy Alaska because all they saw there was snow, ice, and cold. Alaska became the U.S.'s in 1959.
