One of the causes of the Spanish American war was the destruction of American property in Cuba. General Valeriano Weyler was sent to Cuba to keep control of the country. many Cubans in the 1890s began to revolt. he put them into concentration camps. Many died from disease and starvation in the camps. The yellow press was another cause for the war. They always stretched teh truth and sometimes just right up lied. they made it look like Spain was doing terrible things. The newspaper just weanted a war to have something to talk about. The Yellow Press made it sound like Meyler was being brutal and "butchering" people brutally. The sinking of the Maine was the big reason for the war. Everyone blaimed it on Spain, although they now think it was an accident. Joseph Pulitzer worked for the yellow press. later, the Pulitzer Prize was named after him. The yellow press was named after the first colored cartoon, "Yellow Kid".President Mckinley was the president during the war. Enrique Dupay de Lome was the Spanish embassador. he wrote a letter that was given to the Yellow Press. He called McKinley weak and bitter and that he gives into what other people want and that he is spineless. the USS Maine was being sent to Havana Harbor. It exploded and everyone accused Spain. Spain took Weyler out of power and ended concentration camps. They apologized for the Maine and they agreed to give Cuba independence. But we still went to war with Spain. Teddy Roosevelt fought the Spanish on Kettle hill. He said it was San Juan Hill because it just sounded cooler. The Soldiers in his Cavalry unit were fed poor food and many died. Many of the horses ran off. The Navy did much better in the fighting area. John Hay called the War a Slendid Little War because it was short, we had very few casualties, and we won.The Treaty of Paris: Cuba got independence with "strings attached". We also got Guam, Phillipines for $20 mil, and Puerto Rico.
