It's Friday, and we are still working on chapter ten blogs. Zack Harris did not have his blog finished on the Spanish-American war. Mr.Bruns talked about this war instead of waiting for Zack to get his finished. The war goals were to secure foal indepence for Cuba and for the Americas not to take Cuba over. Alot of people in our country wanted to take Cuba over. The Teller Amendment said US would not take over Cuba when war was over. They felt that taking over Cuba would take more money and more fights would break out in the countries. Jose Marti was a Cuban leader that pushed for very hard for Cuban Indepence. He destroyed American property in Cuba, (sugar cane plantations.) He made it looked like the Spanish was destroying American property. One of the causes was destruction of American property in Cuba. General Valeriano Weyler was sent to Cuba to keep control of the country. He rounded up a bunch of rural citizens and put them in concentration camps. They were not like Hitler's camps in Germany. He was called "the butcher" by the yellow press. The yellow press was really the first newspaper that stretched the truth in NYC. They wanted war so they could sell more and more newspapers. They made it look like General Weyler was killing Cubans. He did not actually "butcher" people. Most of the people in the concentration camps died of diseases. Main reasons we went to Spain was the sinking of the USS Maine. The USS Maine was sent to protect US property. Today, we believe it was an accient and Spain didnt actually sink the ship and they believe it was an internal explosion.William Randolh Hurst was the newspaper empire of the day. Joesph Pulitzer was Hurst's main competitor. They both owned newspapers in NYC. Both the newspapers were considered yellow press because they stretch the truth. They got the name "yellow press" from the first yellow print in newspapers. The picture was of a yellow kid and had a cartoon story after it. President McKinely was president during the war. Enrique Dupay de Lome wrote a letter that was intersepting and giving to the newspapers. He critised McKinely.Jingolism is a belief that US should go to war. Roosevelt, Lodge, BB owners - many people believe jingoes pressured McKinely to declare war - McKinely had wanted desperately to stay out of the war. Thought that by going to war, US would go into another depression. April 19, 1893 the US declared war. War was declared after Spain had accepted an ultimantum that would have freed Cuba. The Spanish-American War could have easily been avoided. This war was called a splended little war by John Hay. He meant that this war was short and did not last long. The Treaty Of Paris. Results to the war was the Cuba had indepence (with strings attatched.) We got Guam, Puerto Rico, and the Philippines for $20 million.
