Today in class we talked about the blog this week. I am going to do The battle of Somme and Cambrai. The United States stayed isolationist until the 1800's.1.We wanted to avoid foreign wars2.We had a weak army and navy3.We had to build up industry, government, internal improvements4.We had the slavery issue to deal with and the Civil war5.The two oceans kept us geographically isolated-lack of technology6.We had "the west" to settle7. We had vast natural resources here in the US8. Followed Washington's advice to stay our of foreign wars and alliancesI learned that other countries colonized because they ran out of space and we had the West to settle still. People would go there to try and get rich or have some adventure. Then we went on to the Ch 10 projects.US taking of Hawaii. We first got involved in missionary work and sugar cane plantations. Over time the sugar cane becomes very important and the US basically controlled all land and controlled most of the money. Imported sugar to the US was tariff free until the McKinley tariff act. This tariff act put duties on the sugar and they wanted the United States to annex the islands so that they didn't have to pay these tariffs. We forced them to give up Pearl Harbor. They forced the King to give up voting rights for people who didn't own land. The King's sister became Queen and got rid of these voting restrictions. We annexed the islands and they became the last state of the union when the queen gave up fighting against it.US control of CubaWe got control of Cuba because of the Treaty of Paris which ended the Spanish American War.
