In 1916, Russia was going to give up Alaska. Great Britain and America were the two considered countries to gain posession over Alaska. America won but had trouble gathering money to buy Alaska because people thought it was a waste of time and money becase of where it was located. We finally got the funding for Alska which costed $7.2 mil. In 1919, Alaska became the 49th state of America.James Cook went to Hawaii and discovered the natives. They rode on the waves with Boards and spoke in odd tongues. Cook noticed Sugar Plantations and everyone wanted possesion over the plantations. Hawaii and US signed a treaty to trade sugar but the US wanted it for themselves so they went and took it. Later they decided to claim Hawaii. Hawaii said to make them a territory of the US, but they eventually became the 50th state.
