Today is Thursday, and we started going over our chapter ten blogs. Instead of having a chapter nine and chapter ten test, it is moved to a chapter nine and ten quiz. In a test, we would have had a random fifteen questions, but since its only a quiz, there will only be a random six questions asked...read chapter nine and ten...Why did the US stay isolationist until the late 1800's? We wanted to avoid foreign afairs, since we had a weak army and navy. First, we had to build up the first US industry, government, and internal improvements. We had the slavery issue to deal with-Civil War amd Reconstruction. The two oceans kept us geographically isolated. Lack of technology. We needed to settle "the west." We had vast natural resources here in the US. The country followed President Washington's advice, "stay out of foreign wars and alliances."Around the time of the civil war, people decided that we need to expand our country. After the west was settled, they needed to move outward. In 1867, Russia was going to give up the land of Alaska. Either America of Great Britian was going to take up the land offer. They did not want to give the land to Great Britian because they ruled Canada and was the next biggest country to Russia. Andrew Johnson was the president during this time. William Seward, secretary of state, talked to the Russian guy and he wanted America to buy Alaska. The land price was 7.2 million dollars, about 2 cents per acre. Ended up getting the funding. At first they did not want the land, they thought it was too cold, useless, and out of place. Turns out there were a ton of natural resources., by austin mumm.We kept going back to Hawaii for sugar plantations and religious reasons or missionaries. We made tons of money off sugar. The Treaty of 1875 allowed to sugar to be imported into the US from Hawaii. There was no tariffs on this. This was turned into the US putting the tariff back on. This frustrated the people in Hawaii. Hawaii wanted to become a terrority of the US. They strong armed the king of Hawaii, he gave in. At this time, only white Americans owned land in Hawaii. The king allowed only land owners could vote, this was mainly white Americans. The story of taking Hawaii is not a nice way of taking over countries. in 1887, we presured Hawaii to let us make a navy base, which ended up being Pearl Harbor.
