The earliest settlements were made by the polynesians. They traveled to Hawaii by large double-hulled canoes. they brought over pigs, chickens,dogs, and much more stuff. There are some theories regarding migration. One of them is the one-migration theory, which is that a single settlement of the islands happened.On January 18, 17798 James Cook and his crew discovered the fabled Northwest Passage between Alaska and Asia. They were really surprise to find the islands so far north in the Pacific. James named them the Sandwhich Islands. After the discovery of the islands Europeans and Americans started to come also. In one entry of James Cook's log, he described the nativs as "riding the oceans waves on wooden boards". This became the first writen account of surfing.Hawaii was under a single ruler, Kamehameha I, for the first time in 1810 with the help of weapons. Until about 1819, the chiefs of different islands considered themselves under the protection of the British, and flew the Union Flag. The ruler adopted a flag similar to the one used today by the State of Hawaii present flag.In May 1819, Kamehameha II got the throne. Under huge amount of pressure he abolished the system which had ruled the islands.On March 18, 1874 Hawaii singed a treaty with the U.S. granting Americans exclusive trading rights.
