What did progressives do to make our country more democratic?17th Admendment, direct election of senetors, people get to choose instead of state governments. This allowed the common people to have a say in government for what they needed. Secret ballot, people wouldn't be pressured into voting for somebody even though the person didn't really want them. People of the state could call a recall if a state official is doing a terrible job, this brings the election earlier to make life better. Inititive and Reffurendo people of the state could initiate a bill then the people would vote in a reffurendum if they get enough signatures then it can be voted on to be passed and made on a law, and if it doesn't pass then it's not a law. It's not national, only state by state. Direct Primaries/ Cacus, this is when states choose the person from each political party that they think are best suited for the presidents job, the people of the state vote.What were the progressive’s philosophy on tariffs?Taxes on imported and exported items, high tariffs were good for big bussinesses and government because this made the common people buy from American industries instead of other countries. Before the progressive era we had high tariffs. Admendment 13 set up income tax so you have to pay some of it to the government. Describe the Federal Reserve System.
