Today is Tuesday. We are continuing our presentations.3.) What is prohibition. Why did people want prohibition to come about? What tactics were used to bring about prohibition? Prohibition is the banning of something. In this case it was the push for banning alcohol and drunkeness. People, especially women, really pushed for the banning of alcohol because public and private drunkeness led to the destruction of many families. These people also believed that if alcohol was banned, gambling, crime, murder, prostitution, drug rings, and other morally wrong activities would die out. Tactics included a women named Carry Nation who would go into saloons and destroy the place with a hatchet. Protests and whatnot were also performed.4.) What did progressives do to help workers reduce the number of hours they had to work? Children were often sent to work for as many hours as the adults. The children and adults would work many hours a day nearly every day of the week. These pepole were literally dying of fatigue and the stress that working so long in various conditions demanded. The Progressives worked to ban child labor and to limit the number of working hours. Muller vs. Oregon: This case was taken to the Supreme Court. The Supreme Court passed a law that limited the number of hours that a woman could work to ten hours. Another law later on limited the amount of hours to ten hours for both men and women. Company owners really dissaproved of this law because they felt that since it was their company, they could set any number of hours for any worker that they want. They felt that this was a violation of power that could not be taken away. Today, the number of hours a day that people can work really depends on the state.5.) What did the progressives do to make our country more democratic?6.) What is women's suffrage? What approaches did women use to gain the right to vote? Women's suffrage is the term for women's right to vote. Early on in our country, up until 1920, women were unable to vote. Women were furious after the Civil War when African American men were allowed to vote. Progressives started Women's Suffrage conventions in which thousands of women attended. They signed petitions that would be sent to Congress to pass the law allowing women to vote. The three-pronged strategy to get women the right to vote was this: They first tried to get each state, one by one, to allow women the right to vote in that state. Western states were quick to allow this. The second step was to try to test the courts. The women thought that since they were legally US citizens, they had the right to vote. This unfortunately failed. The third step was to get a Constitutional Amendment passed that would ensure women's right to vote. It took nearly 50 years for this law to be passed. Today, thanks to the dedication that women of the past portrayed, women have equal rights with men in our country.7.) What did progressives do to bring about better wages for workers? Prior to the Progressive Era, workers recieved a very small amount of money for their wages. Families often spent more money than they had and were unable to support their families unless the children worked as well. Factory workers really had to fight to get a decent wage, and women really really had to fight to get paid as much money as the men. Henry Ford came up with the $5 dollar day. He paid all of his workers $5 dollars everyday for an eight hour work day. He figured that happy, hard-working, and well paid workers would be a great asset to the company.8.) What is segregation?
