Today i discussed. My topic was Prohibition.-What did Progressives do to reduce hours for workers? The supreme court case Muller vs Oregan said that women couldn't work more than 10 hours a day. About nine years later in 1917 the supreme court upheld a ten hour work day for men. In the 1900's children somtimes worked up to 19 hours a day and adults would work about 15-19 hours a day. Today people typically work 8 hours a day, 40 hours a week. If you work overtime you should get payed more. Some people who for example have their own business they can work more. If you are under sixteen and working somewhere today you have to be done working by 7 P.M. You have to be 14 years old to work.-What did Progressives do to make our government more democratic? The 17th amendment allowed the people of the state to choose the senators in 1913 instead of the state legislatures. Political machines ususally picked who they wanted to be president, because of this Direct Primaries took the power from political machines. These are all designed to give the common person. Before secret ballots it was open and other people could see who you voted for. Some people like Boss Tweed would pay you or give you things to vote for who they wanted to win. If you tried to go against them they could see who you voted for. Referendum's allow people to decide if they want to law to pass or not. If for example Iowa wanted to change something they would have to have a certain amount of people sign a bill. The state would send out a referendum and the people would vote on the referendum. Recall allows people to recall the governor or any other person in government for their state if they think they aren't doing a good job.
