Illegal Immigration Stats today- Some hop the border, others arrive legal but they stay after their green card expired, 11.4 million illegals living in US, reason some people come here illegally because there's a long process (5-10 years)to become legal citizens. Most are young- 61% are between 25 and 44. 53% are male. Most of them are from Mexico and other Latin American countries.

1870-1920: Golden Age of Immigration- millions came to US from Europe alone.

Racist period of time

WASP- White Anglo-Saxon Protestant- WASPs were the immigrants who were most welcomed.

Nativists- wanted to help only people like those who were born in the country.

"old immigrants" were the WASPS, "new immigrants" were basically everyone else.

Tuesday- continue on chapter 7

1870-1920- 20 million Europeans came to US- old immigrants were quick to fit in, new immigrants were more separated from others- Chinatown, Little Italy, etc.

Steps to Immigrating to America:

- Leaving Home- common for one person from a family to come to America first and make a place for their families and eventually bring them over as well. 1900-1910, almost 95% of immigrants arriving at Ellis Island were joining family or friends In 1901, 40-65% came either of prepaid tickets or with money sent to them from the US.

- Board the Ship- ticket to America cost $30. Three types of accommodation- first class, second class, and steerage. Only steerage passengers were processed at Ellis Island. First and second class passengers were quickly "inspected" on board the ship. Larger ships could hold from 1,500 to 2,000 immigrants, netting a profit of $45,000 to $60,000 for a single, one-way trip. For many, the experience of steerage was a nightmare. At one point, the average passenger mortality rate was 10% per voyage. Conditions were quite overcrowded, dark, unsanitary and foul-smelling. Despite these conditions, they had faith in the future. Crossing the Atlantic could take anywhere from a week to over a month, depending on the ship and weather and where they came from. They played cards, sang, danced, and talked.

- Inspection- Passengers were inspected for contagious diseases such as cholera, plague, smallpox, typhoid fever, yellow fever, etc. If immigrants had any of the diseases they would be deported. Sick children age 12 or older were sent back alone. If they were younger, their parents were probably forced to go back with them.
