Old Immigrants VS. New immigrants-  Old came from northern or western Europe, were protestant, were literate and skilled, came over as families, had some money in their pockets, tall and fair.. New came from southern and eastern Europe, were not protestant, were illiterate and unskilled, were short and dark, arrived impoverished

Steps to america-

1. leave leaving home: getting the courage and money to leave... it was common for one person from a family to go then eventually bring over the rest later... from 1900-1910 almost 95% of immigrants arriving to Ellis Island were joining their family or friends

2. on board the ship: couple weeks to a month for traveling.. 30$ to get a ticket.. 1st class for the wealthier, 2nd class for the average, steerage fro the poor.. only steerage passengers were processed at Ellis Island.. first and second class were quickly inspected on board... larger ships could hold from 1,500-2,000 immigrants, netting a profit of $45,000 to $60,000 for a single one way trip.. for many immigrants the steerage was a nightmare.. at one time, the average passenger mortality rate was 10 percent..conditions were extremely overcrowded, dark, unsanitary and foul-smelling.. to pass time they would play cards, sing, dance, talking etc...

3. get to Ellis island for inspection: passengers were inspected for contagious diseases, such as cholera, scarlet fever, typhoid fever, yellow fever, scarlet fever, measles, diphtheria.. if immigrants had any of the diseases they would be deported.. sick children age 12 or older were sent back to Europe alone if sick..

4. What they do once they get there (American Dream is achievable) - They had to exchange their money into american dollars... then they were of to do whatever
