-Taft's Accomplishments
- Passed the Payne-Aldrich Tariff which reduced tariffs- although he raised tariffs for other things
- Broke up many trusts including the Standard oil company in 1911- broke up more trusts than Roosevelt
- Passed 16th amendment- U.S. income tax
-Republican Party Split
- Due to these problems with Taft, the Republicans spit into old-guard republicans and progressive republicans
- Roosevelt did not get the Republican nomination so he decided to run as a third party candidate in the Progressive Party (Bull Moose Party)
- Why would this split guarantee a democrat win?- splits republican vote in half.
Woodrow Wilson Accomplishments-
- Quite the résumé
- Passed Clayton Anti-Trust Act (1914)
- Labor Unions were given the right to exist
- Strikes, boycotts, picketing etc. became legal
- Federal Trade Commission established in 1914- watchdog- investigated companies for monopolistic practices- still around today
- Federal Reserve System-
- America needed stronger banks
- Federal Reserve Act of 1913
- Decided the nation into 12 districts- regional central bank in each district
- "banker's Bank"
- Federal Reserve banks could issue new paper money in emergency situations
- Helped with giving out loan $$
- Banks within the system helped others from closing due to lack of money
- Controls interest rate
- 17th, 18th, 19th amendments were passed during his term
- Direct election of senators (1913)
- Prohibition (1919) (no longer around)
- Women's Vote (1920)
- Keating Owen Act-First federal act fighting child labor
- Adamson Act- Set up 8 hour workday
- African-Americans were for the most part ignored by Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson and the Progressive Movement
- Wilson reinstated segregation in D.C. and also started segregation in U.S. military.
