Monday- continue presentations

-Taft's Accomplishments

  • Passed the Payne-Aldrich Tariff which reduced tariffs- although he raised tariffs for other things
  • Broke up many trusts including the Standard oil company in 1911- broke up more trusts than Roosevelt
  • Passed 16th amendment- U.S. income tax

-Republican Party Split

  • Due to these problems with Taft, the Republicans spit into old-guard republicans and progressive republicans
  • Roosevelt did not get the Republican nomination so he decided to run as a third party candidate in the Progressive Party (Bull Moose Party)
  • Why would this split guarantee a democrat win?- splits republican vote in half.

Woodrow Wilson Accomplishments-

  • Quite the résumé
  • Passed Clayton Anti-Trust Act (1914)
    • Labor Unions were given the right to exist
    • Strikes, boycotts, picketing etc. became legal
  • Federal Trade Commission established in 1914- watchdog- investigated companies for monopolistic practices- still around today
  • Federal Reserve System-
    • America needed stronger banks
    • Federal Reserve Act of 1913
    • Decided the nation into 12 districts- regional central bank in each district
    • "banker's Bank"
    • Federal Reserve banks could issue new paper  money in emergency situations
    • Helped with giving out loan $$
    • Banks within the system helped others from closing due to lack of money
    • Controls interest rate
  • 17th, 18th, 19th amendments were passed during his term
    • Direct election of senators (1913)
    • Prohibition (1919) (no longer around)
    • Women's Vote (1920)
  • Keating Owen Act-First federal act fighting child labor
  • Adamson Act- Set up 8 hour workday
  • African-Americans were for the most part ignored by Roosevelt, Taft, Wilson and the Progressive Movement
  • Wilson reinstated segregation in D.C. and also started segregation in U.S. military.

Wednesday- Finish test and discuss semester test

Thursday- Discuss and start working on WWI project

Friday- Continue research for WWI
