Chelsea finished her presentationProblems with the Railroads--The problems with the railroads were that the farms wanted credit to buy seed and supplies. The farmers just said that they were going to run a credit cycle and just go and get the seed.The Farmers' Alliance. Oliver Hudson Kelly started the Patrons of Husbandry. It was and organization for farmers that became popularly known as the Grange. The grange farmers were fighting against the railroad prices. The memberships grew to 4 million people mostly in the south and west.The Raise and Fall of Populism--It was the movement of people. Farmers were big populis. It was a movement against the rich people. Farmers and common people were trying to find ways to fight the wealthyThey called for:Increase in the money supply,-They wanted a bymetalic circulation. They wanted inflation so their crop prices can go up. -If you were rich you wanted the gold standard so they could have more stability.They wanted a graduated income tax--The more you make the more you have to pay.They wanted direct election of U.S. Senators--The people would elect the senators.They wanted single terms for president and vice president--never happenedThey wanted a secret ballad--Wanted to be private when they voted.They wanted an 8 hour work day.-to help the common worker who worked 12 hours a day 6 days a weekThey wanted restrictions on immigration--Immigrants took the jobs away and they kept wages low.The Panic of 1893--The railroad construction had expanded faster than markets. By the end of the year, over 15,000 businesses and 500 banks collapsed. The governments gold supply went down rapidly. They went through hard times.Bryan and the "Cross of Gold"--McKinley was elected president in 1896. Bryan won tthe Democratic nomination.Now we are starting a new chapterChapter 6 section 1 --A New Industrial Age--Bessemer steel process-Factory workers didn't have anything to work with except iron. They found steel from taking something out of iron.
