Ashley continued on her slideshow.Revised Homestead Act-In 1889 the government "revised" the homestead act. There was a major land give away near what is now called Oklahoma. After a few days there was over 2 million acres that were given away.A lot of people went done early to claim land but they werent supposed to.Protecting the Frontier-Henry and Nathaniel wanted to protect the wilderness. In 1872 Yellowstone National Park was created. In 1893 Phillip wrote an essay that was about how beautilful the land was and that we should protect it.Challenges on the Plains--There was a lot of hardships for settling out west. Like floods, droughts, fries, blizzards, locust plagues and occasional raids.Homes of the Plains--The homes were dugouts. It was a hole in the side of the hill and the only way people knew anyone was living there was because there was a stove pipe sticking out. They didnt have very much light. There were a lot of snakes and bugs that would get in there. They were fire proof. They leaked a lot when it rained. They lived in these homes because there weren't many trees.Women's Work on the Plains--The women would have to start working outside to help the men. They would carry big buckets of water. They were skilled in doctoring. They canned fruits and vegetables. They sponsored schools and churches.Farm Equipment on the Plains--In 1837 John Deere invented a steel plow. In 1869 a spring tooth harrow was invented. In 1874 barbed wire was invented. In 1830 the grain production increased rapidly.Steel Plow and Reaping Machine-The steel plow was made to cut throught hard praire soil. The reaping machine was used to cut wheat easilyMorrill Act-Introduced by John Smith Morrill. This act gave land to the states to help ag colleges. The land was sold and the money went to colleges."Bread Basket of the Nation"--The farmers developed grains for arid soil. changes made fields grow better.Farmers in Debt-They went into debt because equipment was very expensive. When wheat went up they could afford more. In 1870 Bonanza farms were created by railroad companies and investors.Bonanza Farms-Bonanza is the spanish word meaning good weather. The Bonanza farms couldnt compete with the smaller farms and eventually went into bankrupcy.Shipping Grains-The railroads charged more in the west than in the east. Farmers grew more grain and bought more land which made them go into more debt.Chelsea then started on her presentationChapter 5 Section 3-Farmers and the Populist MovementFarmers Unite to Address Common Problems-The railroads took advantage of the farmers and charged them a lot more. They had to pay money every week to the railroads. If the government puts more money into circulation it will lose it's value. Then the prices of goods go up. Farmers wanted inflation. They wanted crop and animal prices to go up.
