5-1Today Rachel finished her presentation. Cowboys were based off of vaqueros. Cowboys learned a lot from Mexico. Worked 10-14 hours a day. The age of cowboys ranged from 15 to 40 years old. Basically cowboys drove cattle everywhere. Because buffalo kept dying the demand for beef became crazy. By the 1800s the population of the world was 1 billion. Open range was a period of time when the cattle were not fenced in they just roamed everywhere. The open range period ended around 1887 and they started using fences and they went to smaller herds.5-2 settling on the Great PlainsIn 1850-1871 fed. government made land grant to railroads. Ashley talked about the first transcontinentinal railroad, that would go from west coat to east coast. The Central Pacific and Union met in Promentary Point in 1869. The Homestead Act was passed in 1862. This act offers 160 acres of land to any citizen who was the head of a household. They had to build a house on this land and farm the land.
