5.1Today we are stiil doing Rachel`s presentation on chapter 5.1Cowboy- based off vaqueros from mexico. Cowboys worked 10-14 hours a day,if you were a cowboy you could work between ages 10-40, you spent 3 months on cattle drives with 250-300 cattle.spent most time on horsebuffalo were dying so we started eating beef.end of open range- ended b/c of overgrazing,bad weather, and invention of barbed wire. 1883-1887 was really bad period of time, so ranchers converted to smaller herds.5.2Ashley also started hers. Her presentaion was called settling on the Great Plains. There were two main rail roads the union pacific and central pacific. Grant stated that every mile of track the rail road would get 10 sq. ft of land and they would use the land to sell.First transcontinental railroad- central pacific moved east torwards Sacramento and union moved west from Omaha. civil war vetrans - irish, chinease, african american ,and mexican american immigrants did most the work. They met at Promentairy Point ,UT in 1869.Homested act- gave 160 acres free land to any citizen or intended citizen who was head of the house. from 1862-1900 up to 600,000 families took gov. offer. 10% land used was settled by families.
