Chapter 8 section 4.Dawn of Mass Culture.The American Leisure--Middle Class americans from all over the country fought off congestion and dull industrial work because it was 12-13 hours a day 6 or 7 days a week.The Spread of Mass Culture--More people started to go to school because more schools were being built. More site seeing places were also being set up.William. R. Hearst--He was a selfish man. He would write about exaggerated tales so people would read his newspaper. Because he did this he made other newspapers go out of business. He owned the New York Morning Journal.Coney Island--It was an ammusement park 9 miles away from Manhattan. It was just a place were people could go and enjoy themselves for a few hours.Coca-Cola--It was created in 1885 by John Pemberton. It was at first an alcoholic beverage but was later changed into a non-alcoholic drink. It was made to cure headaches. It was sold in Atlanta, Georgia.That was the end of Brandons slideshow.Danielle then started her slideshow. Chapter 8 section 2.Expanding Public EducationSchools for children--The government passed a law that said you had to go to school for 12-16 weeks. They had strick rules. In 1940's became available for blacks. In the corse of twenty years kingergartens really increased in their kids. Kindergarten was created outside of the public school system.Growth of High School--In the 1900's there were more than half a million kids that went to high school. Science, sivics and social studies is what they were taught in high school. When the males graduated they went into like carpentry and mechanics and when the girls graduated they went to office work. High school was not very common back then.Racial Discrimination--African Americans were excluded from public education. They kids usually dropped out after four years. More than 2/3 were homeschooledEducation--Most immigrants sent their children to america for free school. Most adults went to school during the night. They encouraged them to go to school. They were encouraged to go to school so they could learn the culture. 20 million immigrants came to the U.S and only 15% were legal.Universities--Between 1890 and 1920's a lot more kids went to college. The research offered courses in languages, the physical science, psychology, and socialogy.Higher Education--Between 1800 and 1920 industrial education changed. They had their own separte colleges. They had new disciplines.Booker T. Washington--He believed that rascism was going to end after blacks got labor skills. In 1985 he was the first african american to get his first doctorate degree from Harvard. He started a movement that said that blacks should have a higher education so the communites could have good leaders.
