It opened in 1883.Skyscrapers--They were able to make these because of the new steel. Frank Lloyd Wright said that skyscrapers were a new thing under the sun because they were so tall. They helped solve urban problems because they had more people and they didn't have room so they went up.Electric Transit--Changes in Transportation let cities expand. In 1888, in Richmond, Virginia became the first city to electify it's urban transit.Engineering and Urban Planning--Steel-Cable suspension bridges that is what the Brooklyn Bridge is. You could walk across the bridges and look at the waterCity Planning--The poplutaion grew a lot in just 30 years. Chicago grew tremandously,New Technologies--Communincation brought the country close together. Printing aviation and photography helped to speed the transfer of information.A Revolution in Printing--The literacy rate in the United States grew a lot. Chapter 8 section 2Expanding Public EducationWilliam Torrey Harris--He was and educational reformer. He believed that schools should help prepair kids for their lives as adults. He was a superintendent and he was one of the first schools to put a kindergarten in the school.Schools for Children--In the late 1800's there were one room school houses and they didnt go to school in the fall or spring. In 1865 and 1895 children 8 to 14 were required to attend 12 to 16 weeks of school. There was a lot of physical punishment. Kindergarten started as childcare for working mothers but then it turned into like school.The Growth of High Schools--They started in the early 1900's. 6.3% of seventeen year olds gradutated.Immigrants--They were incouraged to go to school to be more Americanized. The kids would go to school during the day and the adults would take night classes. Children went to public school for free. They wanted them to be able to read the bible to pass the American Citizenship test or whatever.Racial Discrimination--African Americans did not attend high school because of discrimination. A few would attend private schools.
