Today Andrea presented. ...Municipal grafting is what some people turned to, its illegal, corruption in the government. Some political machines would pay people off to vote for a certain candidate. People would also change their name and image and go and vote over and over again. Civil Service Replace Patronage began in the early 19th century. It was government giving jobs to people who helped a candidate elect. This brought a lot of corruption to the government. Presidents didn't last very long during this time because of all of the fighting about supporting the wealthy people or supporting the common person. What caused all this corruption in government?patronage, greedy people, lack of government laws, poor leadership from president, all the important people in government basically weren’t following the laws themselves. What laws came about to reform government?Pendleton Civil Service Act. This act required that people pass tests to be given government jobs. Made sure they were qualified enough for the job.Ulysses S. Grant-major scandals-status quo, Rutherford B. Hayes-reformer, James Garfield-reformer-president for less than year- got shot- republican, Chester Arthur-status quo but became a reformer after the assassination, Grover Cleveland-reformer, Benjamin Harrison-status quo, Grover Cleveland-elected again-reformer and William Mckinley-status quo were all presidents during the late 1800's. Were they a reform president or a status quo president? (Stallwort means president who were status quo presidents who only benefited the wealthy.) .. (Half breeds are republicans that were reformers. They wanted to help the common person.)
