7-2What problems did cities fact due to the rapid increase in population?overpopulation, not very much waterWhat did some people do to try to help the bad situation in the citieswaterworks, sprinklers in buildings, buildings built out of brick, settlement housesToday Megan continued doing her presentation. New York and Cleveland were the first cities to use waterworks. Crime was a major problem because the cities were so crowded. A lot of police officers would make an agreement with rich people. They would just give the officers money to look past whatever they did. A lot of fires would occur. Because they had a limited supply of water and the buildings were made of wood they would spread really easily. They didn’t have as many firefighters because they were volunteers. In 1774 they came up with the sprinklers in buildings for fire issues. And they also started building buildings out of cement and brick instead of wood. Charles Stover and Stanton Coit started the settlement houses in 1886. A settlement house is a place for poor immigrants or people to live and eat. In 1910 over 400 houses were funded in the country. Jane Adams started a peace movement to stop discrimination against immigrants and she was one of the first women to win a Nobel Peace Prize.7-3Politics in the Gilded AgeWhat was the political machine and what did they do for a city? The political machine was a group of people that controlled the activities of a political party in a city.
