Today Bre finished her project and talked about Boss Tweed. She also talked about patronage.Presidents didnt like patronage, giving jobs to people that helped get the person elected.Jobs should go to those who are most pualified no matter what their political views are. This want for a merit system began political reform. Then she talked about the Pendleton Civil Service Act.It was brought up by chester a arthur in 1883 when he became president after james a Garfield died from gun shot wounds. This act of reform made it so federal jobs were given because the person was qualified not because of the people they knew. The federal system worked better and gradually became more honest. But since machines couldnt push employees to give them oney the government became closer to the wealthy business owner. Then she talked about the people that were for reform. Then seh talked aboiut Grover Cleveland. Cleveland wanted to reform for lower tariffs, but congress never supported him. He didnt think it was fair to have high tariffs because it made the people pay more.Next sarah started her pawerpoint. She talked about why imigrants came to the united states like the Europeans chinese japaniese mexicans and west indies.Immigrants came in on boats and came in at Ellis Island. The boat living was horrible. The food was bad and a lot of people died of diseases. and there wasnt much room on the boat.
