Tweed RingScandal-Building new court house in New York. Made tax payers pay $13 million, about $178 million today. Project only cost $3 million, about $7 million now. The $10 million went to the members of the Tweed Ring.Court Rulings due to Scandal-Tweed had a 120 counts of fraud and extortion, sentenced to 12 years, but was out after a year. Arrested again on other charges and escaped from jail. Went to spain.Patronage Spurs Reform- Presidents didn't like patronage, giving jobs to people that helped get the person elected. Jobs should go to those who are mose qualified no matter what their political views are. This want for a meri tsystem began politcal reform.Pidleton Civil Service act-Brought up by Chester A. Arthur in 1883 when he became president after James A. Garfield died from gun shot wounds. This Act of Reform made it so federal jobs went given because the person was qualified not because of the people they knew. Federal system worked better and gradually became more honest. But since machines couldn't push employees to give them money the government became closer to the wealthy busines owner.People for Reform- Ruther B Hayes, James Garfield Chester Cleveland, Benjamin Harrison, William McKinley.Grover Cleveland- Cleveland wanted to reform for lower tarrifs but congress never supported him. He didn't think it was fair to have high tariffs because it made the people pay more.Benjamin Harrison and William McKinley- Harrison and McKinely wanted high tariffs and got tehm with the McKinley Tariff act ok.The New Immigration-What will be covered- Through the "Golden Door", Why they came, number of immigrants.
