Today in Us History we went over more projects.Section 8-1In 1890, Louis Sullivan designed the first skyscraper, the 10 story Wainwright Building in St Louis. During the 1870s and 1860s, they invented cable cars, Underground cables were installed and cable cars ran overtop them. Railroads and cabes made our cities larger and easier to move around in. In 1890, America's literacy rate, the ability to read and write, increased 90 %. Publisers and libraries had to put out more books and newspaper to keep up with demand.Wilbur and Orville Wright evented the first airplane. They invented it in 1903. It required serious time to take a picture so in 1888, Eastman invented the first Kodak Camera. It costed $25 and included a 100 roll of film.Section 8-2: Expanding Public EducationReforms in Public Education led to a rise in national literacy and the promotion of education. The education system is the foundation of the democratic ideals of American Society. By the civil war, most states had public schools. Many kids didnt go to school and and ones who did left early and never went on to high school. When education laws first became enforced, in 1865 and 1885, they were strict. Curriculums were brought into classrooms and new laws were introduced to school teachers and students. They required students attend at least 12 to14 weeks of school during the year. Lessons taught and required were reading, writing, and arithmetic. When the rules were first formed, they were strict and children were criticized and unhappy.Employed women and others just beginning to enter the workforce required someone to watch their young children. Kindergarten was formed from this. It proved to be a great help for everyone.Early on, African Americans were taught seperately. The education was different for them. It was mainly in the South but was everywhere. In the 1940s, it changed and everyone was taught together.High School population began to grow so everyone could get an education and get higher paid jobs and become successful. By 1900, more than 500,000 students attended high school. The course were new and improved. Men prepared for industry and women prepared for office work. There were Drastic increased in attendence.Immigrants were encouraged to be Americanized. Adults attended night school and children attended regular school. There were many Jew immigrants. There wwere also Catholic Schools that were established. The Catholics wanted their children to maintain their religious views.
